F. K. Wacker, S. G. Nour, J. L. Duerk, J. S. Lewin Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals, Dept. of Radiology, Cleveland, OH, United States Synopsis: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of MRI to control radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of pulmonary tissue in a rabbit model. Puncture and lung RFA were performed in 5 New Zealand White rabbits under MR image control using a 0.2 T open MR scanner. The ablation effect was assessed using MRI, CT and pathology. MRI procedure guidance was feasible. Pneumothorax could be detected and treated during imaging. MR was superior to CT in defining the thermal lesion. Our results indicate MRI guidance is useful for thermal ablation of pulmonary tissue and suggest that patient trials may be warranted.

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors
Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

Background MR-guided electrophysiology (MR-EP) for the treatment of arrhythmia has the potential advantages of improved soft tissue contrast navigation and visualization of ablation-induced tissue changes. In the past, the development of MR-conditional EP catheters and an appropriate image guidance platform have represented major obstacles. The aim of this work was to establish and evaluate a c...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Brightness Changes in Ultrasound Images due to Temperature Variations in Liver Tissue during Radiofrequency Ablation
Introduction: one of the minimally invasive methods of treatmenting liver malignancies is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) which can be applied to primary or secondary tumors. Nevertheless, the disease recurrence is probable after RFA application partially due to the inadequate capability of temperature monitoring of the target tissue and visualizing the thermal damage. The goal of this work was t...
متن کاملI-46: Radiofrequency Ablation of Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign solid tumors that are present in the majority of women. While often asymptomatic, fibroids can result in abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain, subfertility, dyspareunia and other symptoms. Submucous and intramural fibroids are most associated with heavy menstrual bleeding; subserosal fibroids are more often innocuous unless sufficiently large so as to con...
متن کاملImage-guided percutaneous ablation of lung malignancies: A minimally invasive alternative for nonsurgical patients or unresectable tumors.
Lung cancer remains the malignancy with the highest mortality and second highest incidence in both men and women within the United States. Image-guided ablative therapies are safe and effective for localized control of unresectable liver, renal, bone, and lung tumors. Local ablative therapies have been shown to slow disease progression and prolong disease-free survival in patients who are not s...
